Kuro Reader Shoutout w/some caveats
TL:DR Kuro Reader is a great open source e-reader app that's currently developed as of the publishing of this article. It's focus is comics via compatibility with .cbz, .cbr, .pdf, etc.
I like being able to load android applications without the need to get Google's blessing. That means installing the .apk files directly onto my phone. Which btw can be downloaded directly from the github repo of KuroReader. You can download the free or pro version but be aware that downloading the PRO version will give a pop up asking for the activation key. Basically what happened is that Kuro Reader was temporarily removed from the Google play store and the developer created an alternative method to validate those who purchased the PRO version on the google play store. That was to use the receipt number of your purchase on the google play store, you then "log in" into the database of confirmed purchases where you then get an activation key to register onto the device you're using and can then enjoy all the PRO features promised such as:
- editing the comic metadata
- Dark theme
While the paid features aren't the most sexy among the e-reading applications, I still think it's worthwhile to pay for the PRO version if nothing else to show support for people building alternatives to what already exists and who offer straight through installation methods that don't require Google's stamp of approval. Keep in mind that if you don't want to purchase the application through the google play store, you can also send the developer money via paypal but you'll have to email them to have your purchase added to the database so you can then get the activation key you need for the pro version of the application.
