"Negative Positive Angler" anime review
TL:DR Nice Slice of life about fishing, nothing too profound but also no major dealbreakers. Watch 2 episodes and if nothing catches your interest, it probably won't be for you.
What drew me to this show was the blurb describing the main character as someone at the bottom of his life. A terminal diagnosis, indebted to gangsters and one bad gacha pull away from hanging himself in the public bathroom. Sasaki decides to instead dive into a river to escape said gangsters and is saved by some random fishermen. Upon waking up, he realizes part of his debt has been paid off by said fishermen and that rather than run away (what the fisherman assume) our main guy should take up fishing. Sasaki makes a private agreement to work off his debt by working at a fish shop where the workers are themselves crazy about fishing, such as the nuances between several types of lures and the best hours to go fishing for certain categories of fishes. The majority of the series focuses on Sasaki getting used to enjoy the slowness that comes with fishing while struggling to decide how to spend what he sees as the short remainder of his life. His secret gets revealed with some drama on how to proceed with one of the fishermen that saved him. The series as a whole is less interested in the grand narrative of how to grapple with one's own mortality and mistakes than it is in reminding you to stop neglecting the social connections and the everyday joys one can take in going fishing with some friends.
